CHARLOTTE — Kelsey Rhinehart’s 15 years of dance lessons at Miss Jacies Dance Studio in Marion paid off in a big way at the end of June when she won a spot on the Charlotte Bobcats Dance Team.

Charlotte is the 30th NBA team and is entering its second season.

A McDowell county native, Rhinehart has danced nearly all her life, starting with lessons at the age of 3, competing by the age of 6 and a member of the cheerleading squad all four years at McDowell High School.

Even after moving to Charlotte, Rhinehart kept up her involvement in dance by coaching all-star competition cheerleading teams and by becoming a member of the Charlotte Cobras Arena Football League Dance Team.

Rhinehart received her college degree in physical therapy and will work with HealthSouth at the Carolina Spine Center in Charlotte, but her schedule won’t be getting any easier.

“Right now, in addition to my work, we will practice Tuesdays and Thursdays and then every other Saturday; and that doesn’t count game time,” Rhinehart said. “Even with all the work, I’m still very excited about the opportunity.”

Yaa Obeng, game operations coordinator for the Bobcats, is also excited about the coming season.

“A key element of our in-game entertainment is the dance team,” he said.

Obeng added, “But remember, the dancers are more than just entertainers. The squad also makes countless community and promotional appearances throughout the year.”
